The First Diet: Transform Your Health With the Food That Made You Human.

The First Diet explains what we know about the diet humans ate while we were evolving to become human.

This is not Paleo. Paleo is the diet humans ate after we already evolved and moved away from our tropical evolutionary roots. The Paleo diet is a diet centered around survival in harsh elements.

The First Diet is a thriving diet. It's the diet that allowed us so much metabolic energy and health that we were able to afford such large brains.

What Is The First Diet About Exactly?

Sean-Jackson-HeadshotHi, I'm Sean Bissell, I'm a dad to two boys, a husband and a nutrition nut who lives in the Seattle area.

I'm also the author of The First Diet, the Sean Bissell Fat Loss Report, Honey The Sweet Truth, and I'm about to tell you how to transform your health with the food that made you human.

But first I want to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my book, The First Diet, and why I wrote it.

When I was just 20 years old, doctors discovered a significant plaque buildup in the arteries leading to my brain.

Blocked-Artery

The doctors didn't have any answers on how to fix the issue, so I was left on my own to find answers for myself.

That was extremely scary, and I've been studying nutrition almost obsessively ever since. Luckily I did find the answers I was looking for.

But nutrition is a very complex subject to sort through. Studying diet is like navigating a minefield sown with extremes. People can get pretty black and white with it.

I wanted to take the time and effort I made toward understanding food and nutrition and put it into a practical and informative guide that leaves room for more study.

The book is called The First Diet, and it explains what we know about the diet humans ate while we were evolving to become human.

This is not Paleo, as Paleo is the diet humans ate after we already evolved and moved away from tropical Ethiopia, where the first human remains were found, and where we likely evolved.

Human-Migration

The image Paleo has of cavemen in the cold, huddled around a fire with a spear is more of a survival diet.

The First Diet is a thriving diet, it's the diet humans ate that allowed us so much metabolic energy and health that we were able to afford such large brains.

Neurons

The First Diet is focused on this part of our evolutionary history. The First Diet combines our evolutionary past with modern science, and provides practical, and simple ways to use that in your daily life.

Being connected to history and heritage can be a great way to get perspective on the present.

This book presents an eye-opening narrative about nutrition within the framework of examining our origins as humans while meticulously providing footnotes and references. The listing of the RDA requirements for nutrients within the context of macronutrient balance provides a great practical starting point where most diet books leave you lost in terms of knowing what type of nutrient intake you’ll experience.

But the best part about this book is that the author has a balanced approach to health and life. His recommendations are sustainable for the long run and help you avoid the yo-yo food neurosis that people experience as they follow the fads. The author wisely recognizes that there is more to health than just your diet and gives insight to what overall can affect your health. He describes types of exercise that enhance metabolism that don't beat you down in an endless cycle of too much energy going out and not enough recovery to sustain the nutritional benefits to health.

To top it all off he offers amazing recipes that look delicious and are all within the First Diet parameters for health while listing the macronutrient content. Very well-written, detailed, and insightful book.

I really enjoyed the book! It is easy to follow and understand, but also provides the necessary details, support, and explanations to back up the claims and approach. It is now my top recommendation for those looking to gain a better understanding on where to start with improving their nutrition and health.

I wish I had a time machine to give my younger self this book, it's an excellent guide to big-bang-for-your-buck techniques in diet/nutrition. It covers enough biology and nutrition to avoid mistakes that even health gurus frequently make, while staying practical and providing specific advice.

Most importantly, it's an easygoing approach. You won't be that person torturing themselves because they had two servings of dessert, or the friend-on-a-special-diet that people have to plan around, or someone spending hundreds on exotic health products. You'll just be that person enjoying a tasty burrito bowl, sagely pondering the nature of glycogen.

I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to read this book. The information on nutrition - how carbohydrates, protein and fat work in our body, as well as vitamin and mineral needs is so easy to read and understand. I have been following a diet by tracking my macros, but this book will take that to a whole new level.

Sean goes into great detail to help readers gain understanding of the good, the bad and the ugly in the nutrition realm. Following the guidelines of this "diet" (read lifestyle) is easy - get the nutrients you need, and then fill in things other things that you want to eat. There are no restrictions with this eating plan as long as you hit the nutrient levels you need.

Thank you Sean, for taking the time to put such comprehensive information all in one place.

Sean did very well writing this book. I've always been on the lookout for a resource I could give my clients with NO CAVEATS, and this is the book. I've shared it with thousands of people via my website and personal recommendations. The thing I love the most about TFD is Sean is not dogmatic in any way. He cites his sources, and he's completely open to the idea that we don't know everything just yet.

I wish I had a book like this years ago when I was going through my struggles. I overcame low temperatures and hypogonadism by following the same principles taught in this book. For me, I had to open up a physiology book to understand the complex nature of how the body works and specific nutritional strategies work to minimize stress and sympathetic nervous system activity. I spent many nights reading elsevier journals, pubmed, oxford medical journals, the journal of clinical nutrition, etc... I've observed that while much of the science sounds reasonable in theory, it generally fails to account for what looks good on paper vs. what realistic in everyday life. I think this is why so many diets fail. They may be based on scientific studies, however the foundation for building healthy approaches are lacking, and thus people are doomed to fail before they even take their first bite on any given "diet."

"The First Diet" is different in that it explains the importance of the science behind how the human metabolism may have evolved. It doesn't do this by asserting what exactly humans ate x number of years ago, but by utilizing what paleontologists generally agree upon as the beginning region of the human race, the equatorial region. Here is where warm-blooded mammals began consuming foods that support warm-blooded metabolisms. With the focus on the equator and foods that come from there, understanding the concepts of how the first diet works becomes much easier. For years I have been trying to think of ways to explain this way of eating. I believe that Sean Bissell found a simple and compelling way to do this in a book that is fun and enjoyable to read. I don't want to give everything away, so I would encourage anyone to pick this up as it can change your life and start making you think differently about everything you've ever learned about human nutrition.
